The aim of this paper is to provide a perspective on the sources of innovation that underlie the creation of low-cost products in emerging economies. It differs from previous analyses in its emphasis on the influence that country specific factors can have, opening the possibility that similar firms, with similar products and similar goals may follow fundamentally different trajectories. It presents two case studies from the automobile industry in China and India, Geely and Tata that show precisely this phenomenon. Building on its capability for flexibility and responsiveness and the existence of a loosely-coupled network of suppliers, Geely took a quasi-open approach to the product architecture for its vehicles. Tata on the other hand followed a broadly closed integral approach to product architecture, building on its vertically integrated structure and tradition of frugal innovation. Based on these case studies, existing theory concerning the co-evolution of product architecture and organisational capabilities and using a process of abductive reasoning, we present a framework that can be used to explain this divergence. The framework highlights the interactions between a product's architecture, a firm's organisational capabilities and country specific external factors such as institutions, industry, markets and technology.

Purpose - The main purpose of this study is to analyse the thermomechanical behavior of the dry contact between the brake disc and pads during the braking phase. Design/methodology/approach - The simulation strategy is based on computer code ANSYS11. The modeling of transient temperature in the disc is actually used to identify the factor of geometric design of the disc to install the ventilation system in vehicles. The thermal-structural analysis is then used coupling to determine the deformation and the Von Mises stress established in the disc, the contact pressure distribution in pads. Findings - The analysis results showed that temperature field and stress field in the process of braking phase were fully coupled. Originality/value - The results are satisfactory when compared with those of the specialized literature.

Instability, supplier consolidation, and grueling price competition in the automotive industry have become a way of life for Tier 2 automotive processors, those small- to medium-size molders and extruders who provide components to Tier 1 firms and original equipment manufacturers. Car makers, racing to capture market share, are aggressively demanding cost savings from vendors. The domino effect from this hard line is passed along from Tier 1 to Tier 2 suppliers. And global industry consolidation means supplier lists are shrinking, with fewer firms providing more components in more regional sectors.

One of the first challenges of the newly inaugurated Obama Administration in 2009 was the parlous state of the Detroit 3 carmakers (Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors Company). Without government intervention, Chrysler and GM faced the strong possibility of having to close their operations and to liquidate their assets. The Obama Administration's publicly stated justification for rescuing Chrysler and GM was twofold: (1) short-term stabilisation of the national economy, (2) long-term strengthening of US manufacturing. Regional policy was not publicly stated as an important goal, but this paper concludes that one result of the rescue has been a tacit implementation of a regional industrial policy in the USA, though not an explicitly adopted strategy.

The framework captures the complexity of power and proves useful for tracing changes in power status over time between value chain members in industrial relationships. We apply the framework in the light of the longitudinal case study of Magna International Inc., a Canadian automotive supplier, and induce a strategic path for suppliers to improve their power status against OEMs.

A profile of Birkby's Plastics, a UK-based leading European plastic moulding company that has successfully completed a management buy-out Birkby's supplies to the major automotive OEMs and Tier One manufacturers and to leading business machine OEMs. It is more than a standard trade moulder and has developed a number of innovative processes, such as in-mould welding (IMW) and in-mould textiles (IMT), which significantly reduce cost and improve product quality. IMW enables hollow vessel components to be produced complete within the moulding machine and IMT drastically cuts the time of manufacturing textile-wrapped car trim components. Robotics plays a major role in all of Birkby's operations and together with its process technology is helping the company to compete with low labour cost regions and maintain production in the UK.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to argue that: in a context of global labour market competition and in the absence of new strategic repertoires, class trade unions are progressively becoming managers of precariousness. Thus, the paper challenges the compromise logic as the unique solution to corporate threats to relocation, since it undermines trade union power resources, mainly discursively and organisationally, and hinders trade union capacity to transform the balance of forces to their favour later, when the hegemonic discourse can more easily be challenged in periods of crisis.

In most cases, only the more luxury models on the market offer the option of an adaptive cruise control system that uses radar. But the potential market and road safety benefits are massive.
